Shop Front
The shopping centre required as part of the lease that the existing shopfront and fitout should be upgraded. In a collaborative design session I and the client started with a number of concepts, including one that picked up the chequer board pattern of the existing tile skirting. I thought of using Perspex and making chess pieces with acorn headed bolts and spacers. Also the chequerboard made me think of dice. After a cruise through the shopping centre I and the client noticed other fitouts were making a lot of use of MDF. The existing sign the client thought was too small, so I proposed a MDF backing that accentuated the shapes in the sign.
In the final design, this backing and the dice were the only elements remaining. I had detailed the MDF backing to be articulated, but the centre management's designer deleted that.
